Attorney Bio

Joe Boyd was born and raised in Southern Maryland and has spent his entire legal career in its courtrooms. He joined the Southern Maryland criminal defense lawyers at Castro Law Group after several years as a prosecutor.

Mr. Boyd began at the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office and became lead prosecutor for vehicular homicides. Those are the hardest cases the State brings. They turn on accident reconstruction, blood draws and chain of custody, timing between the last drink and the crash, and expert testimony that often decides the outcome. Mr. Boyd built those cases. He knows where they are strongest and where they tend to come apart.

He also served on the board of the St. Mary’s County Adult Substance Abuse Recovery Court. Recovery court is a diversion track for defendants whose charges are driven by addiction, and admission decisions are made by people who know how the program actually runs. For a client facing a drug charge or a repeat DUI, whether that door is open is often more consequential than any argument made at trial.

Before prosecuting, Mr. Boyd clerked for the Honorable Karen H. Abrams, former Administrative Judge for the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County. A clerkship is a year spent watching how one bench actually decides cases, which is not something available from the other side of the rail.

He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology, then earned both a master’s degree and his Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the St. Mary’s County Bar Association.

Mr. Boyd lives in St. Mary’s County with his wife and children and follows Baltimore sports.
